The Veterans of Foreign Wars the largest combat veterans service organization in the world, we HONOR OUR DEAD BY HELPING THE LIVING. You the veterans sitting here today are what make our organization the outstanding service organization that it is. You the Veterans of Foreign Wars reaching out to veterans and their families to offer your hand in help, comfort and friendship, to welcome home our comrades in arms who have gone in Harms Way to defend this nations freedoms and our way of life just as each of you did before. No matter where you served, in what armed conflict, or how long you were there we are all brothers and sisters in arms. We all had then and still have today the same goal-Defend the United States from all her enemies whom so ever. Let us continue today what was started 110 years ago by growing our organization to not only being the largest Combat Veterans Service Organization but to become the largest VETERANS Service organization. With all of us working together and bringing in every eligible veteran into our organization, the Veterans of Foreign Wars will not only continue to be the leader in the campaign to ensure Veteran's Entitlements are not shoved aside or forgotten but will be a voice heard above all others through out the State of New Jersey. I thank you for your vote of confidence and allowing me the privilege to lead the greatest department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Great Department of New Jersey. Jack Shiverdaker, VFW Commander

Happy Birthday Veterans of Foreign Wars. The VFW of the US is 110 years old today. The VFW was established September 29, 1899, when a small group of Spanish-America war veterans banded together to create one voice on behalf of all American veterans. Though the founders of this phenomenal organization are no longer with us, the strength and legacy they left behind has endured for the past 110 years.
| CONVENTION: Every summer, thousands of VFW delegates to the national convention converge in a major U.S. city to elect national officers and vote on new governing amendments and organizational bylaws. August 21, 2010 - August 26, 2010 the 111th VFW National Convention will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana. PATRIOTISM: Fostering patriotism and honoring America's veterans, whether it is Independence Day or Veterans Day, is part of the VFW's philosophical core. Public commemorations hosted by VFW Posts worldwide cultivate an appreciation of both the responsibilities and benefits of being an American. |
The VFW, with its Ladies and Mens Auxiliary, includes 2.7 million members in approximately 9,500 Posts worldwide.
Our accomplishments are many, including lobbying for a GI bill for the 21st century; donating more than $1 million each to the Vietnam, Korean, Women in the Service and World War II memorials; fighting for compensation to veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome; and improving VA medical centers services for women veterans.
Annually, VFW members and its Ladies and Mens Auxiliary contribute more than 13 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week.
From providing $2.5 million in college scholarships to high school students every year to encouraging elevation of the Veterans Administration to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there--honoring the dead by helping the living. |
